Nature inspires Simon's powerful and uncompromising paintings of light and colour.
Bold and swift use of oil is characteristic of his paintings, allowing him to capture the diverse qualities of the landscape that has inspired him. A mixture of influences is evident, from the spontaneous fluidity of Jack B. Yeats, to the vivid colours and raw emotion of Howard Hodgkin. Humphrey Ocean RA, commented that the brooding passion within Simon’s work is, “evocative of August Strindberg’s paintings, for their sense of foreboding”.
Fresh and contemporary, Simon’s unique new series of ‘Skyscapes’ comprise of intense colouring across glass and perspex. Alluding to the original “painter of light”, William Turner, Simon follows in the great English romantic landscape tradition, giving centre stage to the majestic beauty of nature.
Recently Simon has tried his hand at portraiture and has already gained significant success having been selected as a finalist for the Davy Portrait Awards. Moving away from the gestural marks and colours that typify his landscapes, he explores a more delicate style and palette. The resulting portraits are candid and striking, capturing the essence of the sitter.
Simon is a London based artist, working from his studio in Chelsea. He makes regular painting trips abroad and has exhibited from New York to London and twice at the Royal Academy of Art.
